Abstract:
Additive manufacturing (AM) has transformed increasing breadth of advanced aviation, industrial, and consumer products—including dental devices, hearing aids, medical implants, and rocket engines—yet AM remains at a limited scale compared to traditional manufacturing, for many good reasons. When considering the ultimate limits of AM and pushing these limits—both technologically and operationally—we must collectively advance new materials, processes, hardware, and computational methods for design and production planning. In this realm I will present selected research including: (1) wavelength-selective photopolymerization to build complex parts with minimal post-processing; (2) printed pantographic lattices and clutches, derived from understanding the limits of jetting-based polymer AM; (3) methods for spatially tailored metal printing. I will also share my reflections on teaching AM for the past ten years, and I will introduce MIT’s Initiative for New Manufacturing which launched in 2025.
