Her research interests include speech and language technologies to support multilingual and multimodal human-computer interactions, eLearning and assistive technologies, as well as big data decision analytics using AI. She leads the interdisciplinary research team that received the first Theme-based Research Scheme Project in Artificial Intelligence in 2019 from the HKSAR Government\u2019s Research Grants Council. She is Chair of Curriculum Development in the CUHK-JC AI4Future Project, which is developing a comprehensive pre-tertiary AI education curriculum that is being taught in a growing number of participating secondary schools across Hong Kong. She was a Plenary Speaker of IEEE ICASSP 2021 and Keynote Speaker of ACL 2021. \u200b<\/p><p>Helen received all her degrees from MIT. She led the establishment of the CUHK Ministry of Education (MoE)-Microsoft Key Laboratory for Human-Centric Computing and Interface Technologies, Tsinghua-CUHK Joint Research Center for Media Sciences, Technologies and Systems, and the CUHK Stanley Ho Big Data Decision Analytics Research Center. She has served as CUHK Faculty of Engineering\u2019s Associate Dean (Research), Chairman of the Department of Systems Engineering and Engineering Management, and Editor-in-Chief of the IEEE Transactions on Audio, Speech and Language Processing. She has been elected APSIPA\u2019s inaugural Distinguished Lecturer and ISCA Distinguished Lecturer. Since 2020, she has served as Co-Director of the Centre for Perceptual and Interactive Intelligence. She is also a member of the AI4SDGs AI for Children Working Group.
