In Honor of the Life and Legacy of Professor Xiaoou Tang (1968-2023)（只提供英文版本）

With deepest sorrow and solemn respect, we mourn the passing of Professor Xiaoou Tang, a revered luminary in the field of Artificial Intelligence, Director of Shanghai AI Lab, and Founder of SenseTime, a close partner of CPII. The loss of Professor Tang leaves an irreplaceable void in the academic, research and technological communities, profoundly felt by us at CPII, his colleagues, collaborators, advisees and students.

Professor Tang was a distinguished Professor in CUHK’s Department of Information Engineering and Outstanding Fellow of the Faculty of Engineering. He obtained his B.S. degree from the University of Science and Technology of China in1990, M.S. degree from the University of Rochester in 1991, and Ph.D. degree from the Massachusetts Institute of Technology in 1996. He founded the CUHK Multimedia Laboratory in 2001 and led his team to attain world-class achievements in the field of Computer Vision and Pattern Recognition, which includes the Best Paper Award at the IEEE Conference on Computer Vision and Pattern Recognition (CVPR) in 2009, and a ground-breaking face recognition system with a world-record accuracy of 99.15%. He founded SenseTime, which rapidly established global prominence and leadership in the artificial intelligence industry.

Professor Tang was instrumental in shaping SenseTime’s collaborations with CPII in the areas of Visual Intelligence, Smart City, and Smart Health, leading to notable patents, papers and impactful applications.

Professor Tang will be sorely missed, not only for his extraordinary contributions but also for his inspiring leadership. His visionary approach and unwavering dedication will continue to inspire our path forward. In honoring his legacy, CPII reaffirms its commitment to advancing technological innovation with unwavering excellence.
